Founded in 1985, the PJC is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization operating with an annual budget of more than$4 million and leading impactful initiatives across Maryland and beyond. As a civil legal aid office, the PJC provides advice and representation to low-income clients, advocates before legislatures and government agencies, and collaborates with community and advocacy organizations. Using legal advocacy tools, the PJC pursues social justice, economic and racial equity, and fundamental human rights for people struggling to meet their basic needs. The Director of Finance and Administration reports to the Executive Director and is the Public Justice Center’s financial leader, acting as a strategic thought partner to the Executive Director and working closely with the Board of Directors, Director of Development, the Legal Director, and other PJC leaders. This role leads financial operations to advance the PJC’s mission, driving systemic change for economic justice and racial equity. The core functions require a proactive, hands-on leader who embodies accomplished leadership across finance, organizational planning and budgeting, human resources, administration, and IT functions. Key to this role is managing a broad scope of financial responsibilities, including day-to-day transactions; payroll; benefits assessment; compliance with payroll taxes, state and federal law, and workers’ compensation; and general business operations. This position offers a financial leader the opportunity to significantly enhance the internal capacity of a high-impact, well-respected organization. Managing a dedicated staff of two administrative personnel and working closely with a contract accountant, the Director ensures robust internal controls and efficient financial operations.
The PJC fosters a collaborative and inclusive work environment, valuing inclusion and encouraging teamwork and innovation.
The PJC supports the professional growth of its employees through training, workshops, and opportunities for learning.
A complete application includes the submission of a resume, a cover letter outlining your interests and experience, and the contact information of at least three professional references to ApplyPJC@publicjustice.org. You will be notified before your references are contacted. Materials will be reviewed and evaluated on a rolling basis, and the position will remain open until filled. No calls, please.
The expectation is that the new Director of Finance and Administration will be able to start in November/December 2024, with an opportunity to train with the current Director of Finance and Administration, who is retiring at the end of December 2024. The target salary for this position is $120,000-$130,000 annually based on knowledge, qualifications, and experience. The PJC is currently operating on a hybrid in-office model, and the new Director is expected to be on-site 2-3 days per week during the initial training period (Baltimore office). Flexibility can be provided based on individual circumstances, ensuring the transition is smooth and effective for both the new hire and the organization.
An excellent cafeteria benefit package in the annual amount of $16,300 is also provided. This package offers health, dental, vision, disability, and life insurance and retirement options. A cafeteria benefits package gives employees flexibility to choose how to direct their benefits. For example, this package can cover 100% of employee healthcare premiums; an employee can choose to direct those funds towards retirement if they already have health insurance or can have remaining funds added to the employee’s taxable salary. PJC employees receive at least 20 days of paid leave, with increases based on length of tenure, 12 paid holidays, and 15 days of sick leave annually. This role is exempt under the Fair Labor Standards Act.
The physical/mental demands of this role are common for a business office environment. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.
The Public Justice Center is an equal opportunity, affirmative action employer that encourages all interested persons to apply regardless of race, color, national origin, ancestry, ethnicity, citizenship, creed, sex, gender, sexual orientation, gender identity, transgender status, age, religion, genetic information, physical or mental disability, marital status, or any other legally protected status.
