A New Day for Maryland’s Wage Lien Law

November 15, 2017 – 8:15 am
Justice for Breakfast

When workers try to recover unpaid wages, it is all too common for employers to avoid paying by selling or hiding their assets. The Wage Lien Law is designed to address this problem, allowing a worker to put a “hold” on the employer’s property until the employer pays the worker the wages the worker has earned. Join Sally Dworak-Fisher, lead attorney of our Workplace Justice Project, for an informative and lively discussion highlighting new court rules for wage liens set to take effect in January. We’ll discuss lessons learned and new ideas for combatting wage theft using Maryland’s unique wage lien statute. The Public Justice Center successfully led the campaign to pass the Wage Lien Law in 2013, and after analyzing challenges to implementation, led efforts to clarify procedural aspects of the law through court rules. Join us for important updates on this critical tool for low-wage and other workers.
